IWMG has
carried out environmental assessments of over twenty-five existing waste disposal
facilities throughout Serbia. The problems of the landfill sites across the country
are much the same. None of the sites have been planned or are managed in a way
that prevents the contamination of the surrounding environment or limits the
health risks to workers and nearby residents. The economic decline of Serbia
over the last decade, along with its isolation from other countries means that
the experts in the field of solid waste management need external technical and
financial assistance to remediate existing landfill sites and construct new
landfill sites.
